Amoeba Review

Liz Phair has always been the cool, intellectual big sister among the gaggle of alterna-girl singer-songwriters of the ’90s. Her 1994 album, Whip-Smart, lives up to its name as a brash, bold, and undeniably brilliant set of songs—and better still, it didn’t let down after her triumphant debut, Exile in Guyville. Phair’s delivery is without hesitation as she tears through “Supernova,” a song in which we (the people) were (purportedly) the muses. The title track continues to support her lo-fi sensibilities and is so stark in arrangement that the story leaps forward like an unexpected “unhappily ever after” at the end of a fairytale. Whip-Smart’s tension between saccharine sweet sounds and her dark, bored-with-life musings was as clever then as it is relevant today. Read More
