Dunn started playing bass at age 13 and studied classical technique at Humboldt State University in California. He plays in a variety of musical styles, including jazz, rock, metal, and classical.
In 1986, shortly after graduating high school, Dunn formed experimental rock band Mr. Bungle with singer Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, and drummer Danny Heifetz. Mr. Bungle's self-titled debut album was produced by John Zorn and released by Warner Bros in 1991. The band members were simultaneously participating in other side projects (Dun, Spruance, and Heifetz formed Secret Chiefs 3 and Patton was in Faith No More) and it would be years between album releases. After two more studio albums in 1995 and 1999, Mr. Bungle disbanded in 2000. Prior to Mr. Bungle's dissolution, Dunn joined Mike Patton in a new band, Fantomas, a supergroup featuring Buzz Osborne of the Melvins and Dave Lombardo of Slayer. Fantomas released five albums between 1999-2005 on Patton's record label, Ipecac.
Dunn formed his own band in 1998, trio-convulsant, with whom he's released two albums. He played on John Zorn's 2001 album, The Gift (Tzadik), and has appeared on 15 additional albums with Zorn since then. Dunn also recorded a solo album called Four Films (Tzadik, 2008) and formed another band, Mad Love, which released White With Foam (Ipecac, 2009). Today, Dunn continues to play in a variety of projects with John Zorn, as well as with harpist Shelley Burgon, and Curtis Hasselbring's New Mellow Edwards. He also writes music for independent films.
