Joe Manganiello is an American actor, producer and director best known for his role as werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the HBO television series, True Blood. He has also appeared in films including Magic Mike, What to Expect When You're Expecting, and the forthcoming Ten with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Manganiello graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting. Shortly after relocating to Los Angeles to pursue acting, he signed with a talent agent and auditioned for the role of Peter Parker in the Sam Raimi directed film, Spider-Man (2002). He was cast to play Eugene "Flash" Thompson, Peter Parker's nemisis, alongside Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Willem Dafoe - in his first job after college. Manganiello reprised the role for a brief cameo in 2007's Spider-man 3. After filming Spider-Man, Manganiello worked regularly in television, including guest appearances on Las Vegas, ER, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, Medium, Jake in Progress, 'Til Death, all three CSI shows, VH1's So Notorious, and the MyNetwork TV soap opera American Heiress. Between 2008-2010, Manganiello was a regular cast member of the CW drama One Tree Hill.
In 2010, Manganiello was cast in HBO's True Blood as werewolf Alcide Herveaux. To prepare for the part, he grew a beard, studied live wolves and trained for five months with Hugh Jackman's trainer from X-Men. Manganiello's work on True Blood has earned him both critical and popular acclaim, including a 2011 Scream Award for Breakout Performance and a shared award for Best Ensemble. He was also given a Saturn Award for Best Guest Starring Role in Television and the "Because You're Hot!" award from NewNowNext Awards. The sixth season of True Blood premiered on June 16, 2013.
True Blood was not the first role that required physical training for Manganiello. In 2009, he trained with a Navy Seal for several months for the film Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia. He also trained with a SWAT task force in 2012 for the upcoming David Ayer film, Ten. His willingness to train hard and his physique led to Men's Fitness magazine naming him one of their 25 Fittest Guys of 2011 and Men’s Health placed him on their 100 Fittest Men of All Time in 2012. In addition, Manganiello scored a book deal with Simon & Schuster and will be releasing Joe Manganiello's Evolution: The Cutting Edge Guide to Breaking Down Mental Walls and Building the Body You've Always Wanted in December 2013.Less
