Waiting For Something To Happen (LP)

Amoeba Review

This London-based girl-pop quartet explodes their reputation for doom & gloom on their sophomore triumph, Waiting for Something to Happen. Instead, they give you a sugar-rush of jangle and harmony and a set of unbelievably perfect three-minute pop gems, especially the sparkling "Teenage." The lyrics are still down in the dumps, but that only makes those chiming guitars sing more sweetly. Singer Roxanne Clifford leads the lovely, sinuous harmonies, which recall good things from Lush to the Flatmates to the Dum Dum Girls to the Stone Roses. Thank heaven those young kids of today are finally rediscovering an interest in a melody and a hook, and in trying to sing something that would play well in the big scene of a John Hughes movie. This bubblegum opus can sit on your '80s fuzz-pop record shelf with pride!
