Vol. III Pocketful Of Dreams (CD)
Louis Armstrong
Amoeba Review
Stuart Kremsky 05/04/2010
The third volume of Decca’s uneven reissue series hones in on 1938 to offer most of Armstrong’s big band recordings of that year. With the emphasis on his vocal talents, Armstrong offers up such songs as “The Trumpet Player’s Lament,” “I Double Dare You,” “I’ve Got a Pocketful Of Dreams,” “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” and “It’s Wonderful,” along with new versions of favorites "Ain't Misbehavin'” and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." Most of the backing is supplied by the Luis Russell orchestra, with featured spots for trombonist J.C. Higginbotham and saxophonists Charlie Holmes and Bingie Madison.
