Amoeba Review

Jeff Hunt 05/28/2010

ZZ Top impressed the gnarled blues loyalists with ZZ Top’s First Album and Rio Grande Mud, their first two albums of gritty, over-driven blues-based rock. But their third release made them stars. Tres Hombres was originally released on July 26, 1973 by the London Records label, and it went to #8 on the US album charts. It finds the boys – Billy Gibbons on guitar and lead vocals; Dusty Hill on bass and vocals; and Frank Beard on drums – at their peak. Seriously, “Waitin’ for the Bus,” “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” and “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers” are all on this LP – and they’re the first three songs! “La Grange” is as explosive now as it was in 1973. Tres Hombres is one of the greatest blues-rock albums of all time. Essential. Read More
