Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/08/2010
Autobahn, released in 1974, is Kraftwerk’s greatest achievement, on the simple strength that it was first – there had never been anything like it. However, 1977’s Trans Europe Express is Kraftwerk at the zenith of their influence. Of all the group’s output, this one is the most glossy, evocative, and elegant; the title track is heartbreakingly gorgeous. This is the LP that influenced everyone from David Bowie and Brian Eno to Grandmaster Flash. Visually, the group finally stepped out, and if you think punk was contrary, check out Kraftwerk. They cut their hair, slicked it back with pomade, put on suits, and adopted an arch, silent-film-era, Weimar Republic look. Trans Europe Express is as aggressively unique as any punk record.
