The Singles 86-98 (CD)
Depeche Mode
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
Generally speaking, compilation albums are not that thrilling. As the name implies, the output is simply an assemblage of material that has already been released . . . but electro-pop pioneers Depeche Mode took a different approach. After releasing their first album of singles after only four years, they waited three times that long—as in, like, a dozen years—to release The Singles 86>98, raising a pretty thrilling question: What the fetch could possibly be included on the compilation? The band went through significant sound changes between 1986 and 1998, so there’s a wide array of material spanning the earlier new romantic movement to heavy synth dance-pop. So, what you get is what you expect, in the end—“Strangelove,” “Policy of Truth,” “Personal Jesus,” and a lot of mood swings.
