The Odds (LP)
The Evens
Amoeba Review
11/18/2012
One of the hottest post-punk acts around is a married pair, one of whom is 50, with a child in tow. It helps that said 50-year-old is Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, Minor Threat and Dischord Records fame, and his wife is Amy Farina, a drummer of such post-hardcore acts as The Warmers. Quieter in volume yet no less intense in delivery than their previous bands, The Evens find power in restraint. “King of Kings” begins sounding a bit like another middle-aged, post-post-punk supergroup — Wild Flag — in its spare dryness with eager passion bubbling underneath, as Farina sets the straightforward tone for the album. That passion boils over with MacKaye’s more aggressive vocal on “Wanted Criminals,” with guitarwork that grinds heavily yet relatively distortion-free, like a dull drill hitting even harder when it breaks through. “When I run out of things to do, I do myself” they sing in close harmony on the jazz-inflected “I Do Myself.” MacKaye and Farina create a soundtrack to retaining your fervor and independence even within a domestic, mature relationship on The Odds.
