Sure, everyone loves the Muppets, but a bunch of indie and alternative artists covering beloved Muppets songs as rock songs? Thankfully, the result does what it should, which is to honor the originals — really, Muppets songs like “Rainbow Connection” were quite good to begin with — while casting them in a new light for those who've heard them a thousand times (and especially for younger listeners, who might not know a Muppet from a puppet). The artists treat the Muppets songs with respect, and as such you end up with performances that fit into the artists' catalogs as well — My Morning Jacket's version of “Our World” is a typically gorgeous countrified take, and “Bein' Green's” lamentation over Kermit's skin color seems to fit Andrew Bird perfectly, quirky singer that he is. The more mainstream artists, meanwhile, mostly tuck in their pop ambitions to give the songs their due. The Fray's version of the coffee-house cool “Mahna Mahna,” originally written by Piero Umiliani for an Italian film, is almost good enough to forgive the music they usually make, while OK Go's version of the “Muppet Show Theme Song” is awesomely weird and experimental like Blur — hey, who knew the Muppets' music could so inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational to such a wide variety of modern artists?
