Amoeba Review

08/12/2013

Baz Lurhmann's controversial film version of The Great Gatsby paired the novel's Roaring Twenties setting with modern hip hop from the likes of Jay Z and Beyonce. Whether you thought the score was bold and brilliant or a bad idea, Bryan Ferry Orchestra's era-appropriate jazz orchestra renditions of modern hip hop songs used in the film is an idea too intriguing to ignore. The onetime Roxy Music frontman employed the same orchestra he used for 2012's The Jazz Age, which similarly jazzed up Roxy Music classics, giving the art-pop staples even more of a timeless quality. Here, they similarly create recordings that sound piped in from the victrola, reverent to their era of inspiration while remaining irreverent to the source material. Lana del Rey's "Young & Beautiful" is stripped of its grandiose ambitions and melancholic nature, instead given a perky treatment full of swinging horns and mandolin. Jay Z's "Empire State of Mind" is a less wistful, more sultry take. You might have to use your imagination a bit to hear Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" in the band's rendition, but it's no less beguiling, skipping and shuffling just as carefree as Beyonce in the original video for the song. The jazz standards are even better, such as a take on "Oh! You Have No Idea" featuring a strong performance by Andrea Martin. But perhaps the best track is a version of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," which sees Ferry take the mic for a dark and raspy performance that remains faithful to the original in spirit while giving it a darker shade. The Great Gatsby Jazz Recordings may be a bit of a curio, but it pulls the trick of showing listeners that while styles of music are certainly different in 2013 vs. the 1920s, at its core, songwriting has changed very little.
