The Bears For Lunch (LP)
Guided By Voices
Amoeba Review
11/12/2012
Guided By Voices’ reunion has seen the band do what they do best — release song after song of lo-fi pop mastery — yet they’ve been on a clip unheard of during the band’s initial tenure, releasing three albums in 2012 alone. The third of these, The Bears for Lunch, is the most consistent — something to celebrate within Guided By Voices’ brilliant but sprawling catalog. Single (?) “She Lives In an Airport,” by the band’s own admition, has no chorus, but it’s almost a perfect Guided By Voices song in its combination of inscrutable lyrical wordplay and grungey power-pop guitars. Word is they’ve already finished up The Bears for Lunch’s follow-up. Carry on, lads.
