Coheed & Cambria’s metallic emo is in danger of sounding dinosaurish, and the band seems to know this as they up the prog ante on The Afterman: Decension. While they exhibit neither the obtuseness of The Mars Volta nor the grandiosity of Muse, C&C’s complex riffs and conceptual leanings make them a more humanistic cousin to those bands. They’re also hookier, as the modern-rock radio riffs of songs like “Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute,” the power balladry of “The Aftermath” and power-pop of “Goodnight, Fair Lady” will attest. Even their three-song “Key Entity Extraction” suite has arena-ready riffs. With The Afterman, C&C show they’re just as devoted to catchiness as they are to incorporating complex tempo changes and story arcs.
