Temper Trap (CD)
The Temper Trap
Amoeba Review
Australia’s The Temper Trap came on like a fey U2 with its debut album, Conditions, and its smash single “Sweet Disposition.” On its second and self-titled album, the band ups the volume and attitude and are instantly better for it, befitting the grand scope their songs have always had. The huge, sweeping “Trembling Hands” is like the great single Coldplay has been looking for over the past half-decade, with surging synth strings and impossibly rising vocals. “Need Your Love” fulfills the big rock song quotient, ably fielding a number of influences — classic arena rock, Killers-style radio rock and world music-influenced indie vibes — and spinning them into FM-ready gold. Though those songs stand out as pillars, The Temper Trap is a solid listen throughout, from synth punk jam “London’s Burning” to digital ballad “Miracle.” The Temper Trap clearly are making a bid to be 2012’s great rock hope with their self-titled album, and they just may have achieved that.
