Swinging Doors and The Bottle Let Me Down (LP)
Merle Haggard
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/26/2010
Several of Merle Haggard’s classic albums were reissued and remastered as two-fers in 2006. This two-fer of his debut album Strangers and his follow-up Swinging Doors And The Bottle Let Me Down is probably the best of the lot. Merle Haggard’s debut is filled with honky-tonk charm and weepy tears-in-your-beer style ballads. The album features such classics as “Sing Me A Sad Song,” “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers,” and “Sam Hill,” making for an incredibly entertaining listen. His 1966 follow-up is a duet album with country legend Buck Owens and features more self-penned material than on his previous album, including such great honky-tonk tunes as “The Bottle Let Me Down” and the rocking “I Can’t Stand Me.” This remastered two-fer is an absolute must-have for Hag fans and country completists.
