Whiskeytown, one of the several musical endeavors that served as the launching point for singer-songwriter-extraordinaire Ryan Adams, gets the deluxe edition reissue treatment of their 1997 sophomore album Strangers Almanac. Echoes of Whiskeytown’s alt-country contemporaries Wilco—circa 1996 and their Being There double album—surface in the plaintive homecoming opening track “Inn Town,” before rollicking into the country bar-stomper “Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight.” Ryan croons and crows with a whiskey-soaked longing (a voice that would serve him very well on his debut solo album Heartbreaker in 2000; Strangers Almanac certainly provided more than a blueprint for Ryan’s solo career), with bandmates Caitlin Cary and Phil Wandscher adding subtle violin and guitar flourishes. The band shifts effortlessly between alt-country and indie rock (two genres not always easily defined), across the catchy singles “16 Days” and “Yesterday’s News,” to the staggering “Turn Around” and the amazing slow-burn elegy of the closing track “Not Home Anymore.” Included on this reissue are five bonus tracks recorded live in the studio, as well as an entire bonus disc filled with alternate recordings and previously unreleased material (including covers of Fleetwood Mac and Gram Parsons). Whiskeytown called it quits after only three albums, but in Strangers Almanac, it’s easy to see how Ryan Adams established himself as such an accomplished and prolific solo musician.
