Stories Don't End (LP)
Dawes
Amoeba Review
Daniel Tures 03/10/2013
With their big, crunchy vintage sound, emotionally rich lyrics and most of all, their gloriously catchy riff-driven midtempo tunes, Dawes is ready to break out of the shadows and hit the big time. On their third album, Taylor Goldsmith & co. channel the weary, wistful sound of Jackson Browne and the Laurel Canyon mafia (even the title is a Joan Didion reference), but they update it for the kids with yearning, convoluted wordsmithery that tries to get a handle on the ephemeral quickness of relationships and memories in today's instantaneous world. If nothing else, the granite sturdiness of the guitars and the backbeat gives the lovelorn Goldsmith something to cling to. This is Dawes biggest, most sweeping, powerful record yet, some of which can be attributed to producer Jacquire King, who brought a similar scope and toughness to the Kings of Leon, Of Monsters & Men and the Cold War Kids. Though they recorded it in Asheville, N.C. after a countrywide tour with Mumford and Sons, it's more rooted in their Los Angeles hometown than anything they've done yet, especially on tunes like "From a Window Seat" wherein the narrator gazes down on all the buildings and swimming pools. Dawes will fly you up to see the view.
