Amoeba Review

03/10/2014

When I was in middle school, I saw 311 open for the Stone Temple Pilots who, in turn, were opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At the time, I liked all of the bands quite a bit, though I had started getting into PNW indie-rock the same year so the relationship was becoming if not tenuous, confused. I was excited about seeing the bands in the reverse order they played, just like the event planners booked it. It had been a few years since "Down" & "All Mixed Up" were truly meaningful in my life and while I didn't have any particularly disdain for Hexum and co., they weren't who I was there to see. After an incredible and incredibly energetic opening set which had my friend Julian-From-Hebrew-School and I looking at each other in disbelief, I was, from that point on in the evening, disappointed. STP & RHCP, two bands I fully respect as totally slaying, either simply weren't on that night, or I had been exposed to something too different to get into it on that night. While 311 might not be the first band anyone described as punk, they felt really punk that night, especially in the context of the event and my life, an earnest and energetic bridge to a world of underground music I was just discovering. These days, Hexum releases solo albums as a crooner and I feel like 311 are mostly remembered for songs like "Amber." While they've slowed down the schedule of releases (their last came out in 2011), they never stopped and thus the new record can't feel like a come-and/or-throwback. The band's easy going reggae and ska has incorporated elements from jazz and electronic music seamlessly and the production sounds incredibly contemporary without being forced. Color me impressed.
