Working with two key members of the second Miles Davis quintet, Wayne Shorter’s third Blue Note release in a year took the tenor saxophonist into new, more complex territory. He’d been labeled by some a Coltrane acolyte (every tenor player had to deal with that shadow), and playing with three-quarters of ‘Trane’s famous quartet didn’t help that perception on both Night Dreamer and JuJu. Drummer Elvin Jones returns here, but he’s joined by pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter from Davis’ band, with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard filling out the front line. Shorter penned all six tracks, but the music bears the adventurous stamp of Hancock, who appears here between his two masterpieces, Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage. While not as free floating as those Hancock works, Shorter’s compositions share similarities in their floating harmonies and Hancock’s chord-clusters that seem suspended above the actual melodies. At times, Carter and Jones don’t so much keep time as rearrange it into two competing entities that somehow remain interlocked. The opening “Witch Hunt” is at heart a simple blues over which Shorter, Hubbard and Hancock solo, and “Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum” has a languorous swing that lifts Hubbard’s solo into the stratosphere. “Dance Cadaverous” and “Infant Eyes” have themes so ethereal they seem in danger of falling in on themselves: Hancock toys with the melody on the former, floating above it playfully and returning to it as though to store up energy for the next leap, and Shorter’s romantic lyricism turns the latter into a remarkably gentle ballad. The title track has a strong pulse from Carter, and Hancock lays down slick blues-runs as Hubbard and Shorter state the theme before the latter launches a solo indicative of this new confident sound, his tough tone leavened by lyrical legatos. Jones brings the song to an occasional boil with thunderous press-rolls, but the piece is too advanced to fall into hard bop mores. The closing track “Wildflower” (the reissue offers an interesting alternate take on “Dance Cadaverous”) has a lilting 6/4 beat that Jones and Carter use to urge the soloists – Shorter, Hubbard and Hancock – to expressive new heights. Shorter still had a few impressive Blue Note dates to go over the next few years before turning to fusion, but Speak No Evil could serve as a career best for this era.		Buy $7.99
