Scott 2 (CD)
Scott Walker
Amoeba Review

After leaving The Walker Brothers and embarking on a solo career, Scott Walker had a massive success with his critical acclaimed sophomore release Scott 2, which reached number one on the U.K. charts. It features such standout bittersweet pop tracks as “Best Of Both Worlds,” “Plastic Palace People,” and the energetic opener “Jackie.” And while this may be some of the more tame material by Walker (his two albums following are considered to be his most innovative and weighty), it is far from being your run-of-the-mill crooner pop. There is a heartfelt melodrama here that courageously reaches down into the depths of the soul: this was brazen for the time and can still cut straight to the heart today. Walker’s self-penned “The Amorous Humphrey Plugg” creates a cinematic story like no other pop song had ever before attempted. “Windows Of The World” is pure melancholy bliss, and his take on Tim Hardin’s “Black Sheep Boy” is perhaps the best version you will hear of it. Walker delivers every song not only as if he lives them but as if you are there living it right beside him.
