Teen surf-pop icons Jan & Dean embarked on an ambitious concept album in 1967. Well, at least half the duo did: after a near-fatal car accident that incapacitated Jan Berry, Dean Torrence was left as the sole creator of the music. He brilliantly put together this album, which consists entirely of songs about or in reference to rain, complete with thunderstorm and sheets of rain sound effects. There are truly lovely moments on this album, including “Lullaby In The Rain” and the country-flavored “Taste Of Rain.” Dean Torrence also had a hand in the creation of the songs, with session musicians Larry Knetchel and Joe Osborne sharing song credits throughout the album. Save It For A Rainy Day may be one of those albums that often gets overlooked, but if you happen to see it in your local record bin, it is a gem worthy of picking up.
