Rose Garden (CD)
The Rose Garden
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 05/28/2010
Folk rock group The Rose Garden released their sole LP in 1968. Heavily influenced by The Byrds, the album is sure to please fans of the group as it contains two tracks written by former Byrds member Gene Clark. Neither track had been recorded previously by him or anyone else. The two tracks are instantly recognizable as Clark’s. “Till Today” sounds like it’s straight off his solo album White Light. But it was the Kenny Gist-penned song “Next Plane To London” that scored the group a top 20 hit, the first-ever achievement for their label Atco, who had released Sonny & Cher and Buffalo Springfield. Led by the low alto singer/guitarist Diana DeRose and 12-string guitarist John Noreen, the album is definitely different than those of the superstars of the folk rock genre, and benefits from having an interesting female vocalist as the primary lead. The album was reissued in 2003 on Collector’s Choice and is worth checking out for fans of Gene Clark, The Byrds, and folk rock as a whole.
