Review Rock ‘n’ Roll is John Lennon’s sixth solo album subsequent to the breakup of the Beatles, and its story is a convoluted mess from beginning to end. In short: Lennon was sued in 1974 by publisher Morris Levy for similarities between the Beatles’ 1969 hit “Come Together,” and a Chuck Berry song, “You Can’t Catch Me.” As part of a settlement, Lennon agreed to record and release three songs from Levy’s catalog. The sessions for an entire oldies-themed album began in Hollywood with Phil Spector at the helm; they ended prematurely, in a haze of alcohol, drugs, and mishandled firearms. Spector stole the masters and disappeared. Capitol eventually bought back the tapes; more nonsense ensued; Levy got hold of an unfinished demo and released it himself; Rock ‘n’ Roll was rushed into production by Capitol as a result; however, the 50s nostalgia wave had crested, and sales were mediocre. In the meantime, Lennon and Ono had reconciled, and their son Sean was born; Lennon would retire for five years to tend to his family. -Jeff Hunt |
