Rhythm And Repose (LP)
Glen Hansard
$19.98
Amoeba Review
Glen Hansard’s first solo record after years of success with The Frames, The Swell Season and indie-movie-cum-musical Once is an immensely pleasurable collection of swaying acoustic pop. The gorgeous “Maybe Not Tonight” has lush atmosphere to spare, and it’s nearly impossible not to get swept up in its romanticism. It’s like a late night version of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity?” And “Talking With the Wolves” has a nice propulsive intensity. But he still gets down for some slow burners like “Bird of Sorrow” and “The Storm, It’s Coming,” with his trademark belt, built from time spent busking in Ireland. His diversions from that mode provide some of Rhythm and Respose’s finest moments, like the blue-eyed soul of “Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting,” which benefits from a nicely syncopated backbeat. It’s Hansard’s ability to still do what he’s done so well for years while stretching a bit that makes Rhythm and Repose one of Hansard’s most enjoyable releases yet.
