Comments:
For a two-year period, James Taylor was a massive superstar. His path took a peculiar, ironic route. He was “discovered” by the Beatles, who released his self-titled debut on Apple in 1968; Paul McCartney and George Harrison make guest appearances, yet the album didn’t sell, in part because Taylor didn’t tour to support it. He was in rehab. But he wrote about his experiences there, and succinctly vivified a pessimistic, post-60s malaise, and his second album, 1970’s Sweet Baby James, was a huge hit, as was the follow-up, 1971’s Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. After a two-year hiatus he released 1973’s One Man Dog, which is comprised of a series of brief aural snapshots, more concept haiku than song. The single "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” made it to the Top 20, and fans will appreciate Taylor’s inimitable gift for languid sympathy and sweet melancholy. |
