Amoeba Review

Bowling for Soup’s 12th album doesn’t mess with their formula of hooky, snotty yet sincere pop-punk too much, but it also introduces pumps up their songwriting . Their song “Let’s Go to the Pub” has the same kind of insistent radio riff and nasal vocal about girls who just don’t understand as their previous hits like “Girl All the Bad Guys Want,” a rallying cry to slam jager shots with the boys and forget about girl troubles. While that’s universal and eternal enough a theme and sound, Bowling for Soup acknowledge their ’70s rock nerd core on songs like “My Heart Explodes,” an unexpectedly straightfaced love song with a “la la love me” refrain that would make the Ric Ocasek proud. “Spin Me Around” similarly makes for a heartfelt, lovably cheesy love song about enduring love with a Kansas-style vocal harmony coming out of nowhere at the end. Sometimes pop-punkers grow up and their sound doesn’t have to grow tired in the process.
