A new album from The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez must mean an exercise in creating labyrinthine guitarscapes and Latin-prog-jazz fusion, right? The last of three recent Rodriguez-Lopez albums instead explores moogy electronic textures, and this time he has the help of vocals and lyrics by Teri Gender Bender from bluesy punks Les Butcherettes. Without Teri, Rodriguez-Lopez’s tracks exude nasty sci-fi atmosphere, like the sound equivalent to spending time in Blade Runner’s sewers. Teri’s digitally mainupulated Karen O-ish vocals take it to another place entirely, as the duo comes off as no-wavers akin to Teenage Jesus & the Jerks or Lene Lovich. Fans of Rodriguez-Lopez’s work may be taken aback by a track like the desperate-diva wail of “Waves,” but those who appreciate the inherent drama in the music he’s been a part of should enjoy the combination of Teri’s atonal wails and Rodriguez-Lopez’s sound exploration. The trick will be getting those who don’t think they like Rodriguez-Lopez’s music to check out Octopus Kool Aid, but they should, given how much it breaks with his previous work and how much quality the prolific artist (20-plus solo albums alone) stuffs into an album shorter than much of his previous work. The Berlin-Bowie vibing “Where Are the Angels?” and skittering, scary “Pink Heart,” in which Teri’s otherworldly cries of “out of myself” are worth the price of admission alone, could change anyone’s view of what Rodriguez-Lopez’s music can mean.
