Natty Dread (CD)
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Amoeba Review

Natty Dread is the third major-label LP by Bob Marley and the Wailers; it was released by Chris Blackwell’s famed Island Records in October of 1974. This album marks a bittersweet point in the Bob Marley discography. From here until the end of his life, the Wailers take a subservient role as Marley’s backing band, as founding members and key collaborators Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston leave before the release of Natty Dread. The ace rhythm section sticks around for a while longer – Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother, Carlton Barrett – and Marley adds the I-Threes, female backing vocalists including his wife, Rita. And Natty Dread certainly cements his international fanbase, with hallowed tracks like “No Woman, No Cry,” and the politically charged "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block)." Still, the original Wailers had chemistry galore, and will be missed.
