Sixteen albums in and They Might Be Giants are as manic as ever. Nanobots is 25 songs, 45 minutes, with no filler, as the band trims its songs of any excess verses or space. This isn’t to say Nanobots is anemic; opener “You’re on Fire” is classic TMBG, a full-blooded pop song with ska guitars and misanthropic rejoinders (“you can’t park there!”). Ditto the title track and “Black Ops,” songs that eschew the zaniness TMBG are often known for in favor of low-key tunefulness and paranoia. As the band has in recent years made a few bucks with three children’s albums, they wrestle that Wigglesy sound into creepy songs like “Call You Mom,” which could probably fit on one of their children’s albums if not for its Oedipal overtones. Some songs on Nanobots could have been left on the cutting-room floor, lacking teeth to make an impression; others, like “Circular Karate Chop,” are welcome doses of said zaniness that, when judiciously included, are endearing as classic TMBG. Musically, Nanobots is as varied as ever, touching on funk, punk, surf rock and Tom Waits-style vaudeville. Longtime fans of the band will thrill to songs that cover Tesla, Mark Twain’s skull, insect hospitals, replicants and, my favorite, a “Too Tall Girl” on one delirious psych-pop track. TMBG show growing older doesn’t mean you have to let go of the misunderstood kid in you.
