It's Frightening
(TBD Records)
Brooklyn's Rabbits make good on the promise of their excellent debut, Fort Nightly, on the fine new It's Frightening. The cover art effectively describes the slammin' beatcentric approach here, as the band harnesses piano pulse, bass thump and trashcan stomp to the implacable pound of the dual drummers. Lest ye think this is overkill, the results are quite focused and almost minimal, certainly hypnotic. Spoon's Britt Daniel earns his producing wings on this, his first such effort. Not a little Spoon and Walkmen influence can be heard on the complex, intense, poetic woodcutting here (the Rabbits have toured with both) -- the hoarse, urgent vocals explore enigmatic themes while simultaneously suggesting cutting loose and havin' a good time. Which you should.
