Yesterday and Today
(ANTI)
Building off of a meditative one-note synth hum and sparse, airy programmed drums, Swedish producer Axel Willner brings his songs to angelic crescendos. Fluttery. Sparkling. Otherworldly. Gently euphoric. Not unlike drinking Kombucha, this music is good for you. It’s techno that will help your plants grow! – James S., Hollywood

Axel Willner scored a surprising crossover hit for the forward-thinking minimal electro label Kompakt with the first Field album, From Here We Go Sublime, which seemed to appeal as much to indie kids as to dance fans. Yesterday and Today has pretty much the same appeal -- light, flowing electrodisco that sounds at once vintage and futuristic, while pulling off the great minimalist trick of making less sound like a whole lot more, and turning repetition & simplicity into gentle complexity. Washes of sound and endless pulses of rhythm create a rave-like euphoria, but more like a micro-rave, for your desktop furnishings. Eerie snatches of vocals and oohs and aahs waft by like ghosts -- a bit like if Stereolab had made an electronica album. Turn on to the Field!
