CORRIE
Your friendly neighborhood cashier.

  • Arcade Fire - Funeral
This album is like being airlifted into a Canadian suburb. You can feel the cold on your nose, your cheeks turning pink, but you just put on a scarf, march in place and wait for the marching band to come. Sonic bliss!
  • M. Doughty - Haughty Melodic
Doughty's sweet drone will have you humming, whether you're driving the coast, strolling to the corner store, or "Busting up a Starbucks"! like a familiar fuzzy blankie-this one's for Harith.
  • The Greenhornes - East Grand Blues
Everything you ever liked about ‘60's garage or folk rock rolled into one little band from Ohio, right down to the Byrd like harmonies. These boys have paid their dues, and if you look closely you'll see they've worked with Holly Go Lightly, Loretta Lynn, Brendan Benson and Jack White in various incarnations, they've also had their music featured prominently in Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers". Let them sing you on your day.
  • Joggers - With a Cape and a Cane
This band hailing from Portland is percussion driven, harmonious, and layers their guitars right along with the vocals. their record is really good and the live show is amazing... check the local papers
and catch them next time around.
  • 40 Year-Old Virgin DVD
So this is easily my favorite movie of last year, just because it made me laugh sooo damn hard... it seems Judd Apatow's comic genius goes beyond Jr. high humor, (don't get me wrong it has a healthy dose of it as well), but he knows how to tell a sweeter side to the story. Plus it totally has my vote as the best surprise ending I've seen in a while...
  • Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
This record is both sweet and salty, with lovely harmonies and biting lyrics... so biting I'd say some are good advice... extra lovely is the cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care"... somewhere George Harrison is smiling.
  • Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
This record goes straight to the heart, with it's archetypal images based on Russian folklore, banshee warbles, and velvet tones... it chills yer spine, while warming your soul. Check it!
  • Mogwai - Mr. Beast
This is my first proper Mogwai experience, and this one feeds my head. I listened to it while crossing the country on a plane, and its epic instrumental rock made my skin go tingly and my brain scream for more.

MAX A MILLION ROBES PIERRE
AKA #1 PLAYA

Rollin’ deep in da sunset w/da hot hynas yaddada mean!

  • South Park - Season 6
Dis had me straight rollin’ for dizaze! This show right here was as sick as me - rollin’ in my six-fo sippin’ on some crunk juice!
  • Arrested Development - Season 2
This show had more flava than da Popeyes on Divisadero! Yaddada mean!
  • The Trials of Henry Kissinger DVD
This fool was cappin’ mo’ suckas in Vietnam than Ho-Chi Minh! He was droppin’ bombs like Snoop was droppin’ chronic flakes - straight up ol’ G.
  • Ali G - Season 2
This chap fancies a good laugh. He has a go at it with many a well known chap. Insightful knowledge on throwing jews.
  • Mastodon - Leviathan
Heavy as hell - watch the clones line up.
DON
Body powered by Taco Bell
  • Sia - Colour the Small One
The Zero 7 singer takes a departure from that sound. She brings you a mix of acoustic & sonic orchestral bliss. Think Mazzy Star meets Tori Amos.
  • Rosebuds - Birds Make Good Neighbors
This band has the songwriting sensibility of XTC. Arcade Fire fans, it’s time to jump ship and get on this.
  • Bettye Lavette - I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise
Amazing - these songs will pull out your guts and stomp on your soul. Welcome back, Bettye.
  • Robbie Williams - Intensive Care
Lilac Time fans take note. All songs were co-written by Stephen Duffy. Lyrically the most mature LP to date. Gone is the cheese factor.Maybe America will catch on.
  • Madonna - Confessions on a Dance floor
Esther is back and shakin’ her Kabbalah beads. Fun, frivolous and even Madonna “haters” can’t resist the infectious “Hung Up”.

BEN STEIDEL
I went on a 4-month world tour and all I got was this lousy diabetes.

  • The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday (Frenchkiss)
Tales of drugs and salvation wrapped around ass-kicking (and shaking) bar band swagger & riffage. If only rock lyrics were always this good. Life affirming.
  • Vague Angels - Truth Loved (Fifth Planet Press)
Chris Leo (Van Pelt/The Lapse) returns with an album/novel combo package that is way worth tracking down. The book is called White Pigeons and the CD is chapter 7. A narrative on sex and love in NYC... High concept? Sorta pretentious? Whatevs.
  • Make Believe - Shock Of Being (Flameshovel/Polyvinyl)
Joan Of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Make Believe... these guys are incredible. This album is every bit as intense and amazing as it should be.

ALSO GREAT:
Young Jeezy ft. Jay-Z & Fat Joe - "Go Crazy (Remix)", Bun-B - Trill, Kate Bush - Aeriel, BARR - Beyond Reinforced Jewl Case, Clipse & Clinton Sparks - We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 2, Meneguar - I Was Born At Night, Matias Aguayo - Are You Really Lost, Ellen Allien - Thrills, Cex - Know Doubt, Sufjan Stevens - Illinois, Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow, Three 6 Mafia ft.Young Buck, Eightball & MJG - "Stay Fly", Lady Sovereign live at Club 6, Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (both versions), Diane Cluck - Oh Vanille, Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II, DJ Koze - Kosi Comes Around, Paul Wall - The Peoples Champ,The Jim Yoshii Pile- Up - Picks Us Apart, Marco Passarani - Sullen Look, DJ Shadow ft.Turf Talk & Keak Da Sneak "3 Freaks", Kano - Home Sweet Home, Sir Alice - Sir Alice?, No-Neck Blues Band live at Bottom Of The Hill and at CCA, Boris live in Tokyo, various artists - Bpitch Control Camping 2, Disco-D - Funk Flava 2005, various artists - Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up, The FM3 Buddha Machine, Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, and probably tons of other things I'm forgetting...

The Reggae Guy

20 tracks of vital singles. Includes three new tracks - “Slogans,” “Africa Unite (remix)” and “Stand Up Jamrock”. Excellent collection.
  • Burning Spear - Our Music
This is a dual disc. One side is the 10 CD tracks and the other side is a DVD. No live stuff but it has a nice interview with Winston Rodney and the group. As usual, it’s an excellent CD - Spear fans will love it!
  • Willi Williams - Messenger Man
Excellent CD on Blood & Fire. 8 vocals and 8 dubs + 1 12” mix. Killer roots from the man who wrote “Armagideon Time.”

Live sessions with a full acoustic group - it’s killer! Cedric is in fine form! If you like Cedric Myton you’ll love this one!

This is an excellent reggae CD - not in my section - but it’s killer. Backed by Sly & Robbie, Sinead does some reggae classics!

DAVID JAMES
Used buyer - well, only slightly

  • Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane - Live at Carnegie Hall
The revelation here not being Coltrane - he’s as good as you’d probably guess he would be - but it’s Monk who is playing with more abandon than you’d expect. And check out Shadow Wilson on drums.
  • Nina Simone - The Soul of Nina Simone
Dual Discs suck. They just do. Some players won’t play them. They’re twice as easy to scratch up. Plus, all of the songs on the CD side are available elsewhere. Buy this Dual Disc! Now!! Absurdly fierce live Nina Simone footage on the DVD makes it worth ignoring the first five sentences.
  • Bettye Lavette - I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise
She grazed the charts in the 60s with some soulful weepers (“Let Me Down Easy” being chief among them), but on this album she takes songs from mostly rock and mostly white female songwriters and gets deep inside them. Like, “Thanks. Here’s what this song really means, Fiona.”
  • Scott Amendoza - Believe
Bay Area’s own drummer/composer extraordinaire. With Nels Cline and Jeff Parker on guitars. Together. And Jenny Scheinman too. Funky, fiery, fulfilling.
  • Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate - In the Heart of the Moon & Boubacar
  • Traore - Kongo Magni
Mali Sublime! Luscious strings and subtle grooves for your beautiful listening hours. Peace.

Tip: Oh, yeah, Miles Davis - Cellar Door Sessions 1970 (pure fire), Clarinet Thing - Agony Pipes and Misery Sticks (pure licorice), Bill Frisell - East/West, Danger Doom - My Grandmother DVD

 ZACK SCHREIB
It would be easier if donuts simply did not exist.

TOP 5 LIVE SHOWS AND CORRESPONDING ARTICLES OF MUSIC YOU SHOULD PURCHASE

  • Boredoms
You are a fool if you don't go see them next time around. With 3 drummers on full kits and one wizard commanding neutrinos to his will, you'll feel like you just recycled $300 worth of beer cans and yer gonna buy your mom a present. Please get their latest release Seadrum/House of Sun.
  • DMBQ
Glam psych punishing Japanese powerhouse made me love going to shows again. Riff-tastic and super-tight, hanging from the balcony, whipping his wiener out, diving into the drum set that's been reassembled in the audience while singing into an effects laden gas mask. Watch out though, if yer a lame crowd you may walk away needing stitches as kick drums are hurled at yer head. Sadly, their drummer (used to play with Shonen Knife too), died when the van over-turned in Jersey. Help out with the costs and pick up Essential Sounds From the Far East.
  • Barbarasteele
Destined for LIVE 105 stardom/greatness, these loc'd out gees kick the shit out of Franz Ferdinand and their ilk. They make you wanna dance like you just used the Bucaneers to beat the Bills on Tecmo Super Bowl. Or, for the ladies, like you just made the Tetris cartridge sizzle and explode. Buy Barbarasteele's fabulous new album, Soul, Set, a Blaze - with guest vocals from blues legend Jimmy McCracklin.
  • Damon Smith with Birgit Ulher & Jerome Bryerton
The Luggage Store at 6th & Market is the city's currently longest running venue I've been told. They host art exhibits and every Thursday night around 8ish you can find the best local experimental and avant jazz in town. Our main man in S.F., Damon, utilizes his upright bass to put you on a tenuous vapor ghost ship then plunking you into a "LOST" orgy with John Locke, a polar bear, Shannon, and the monster. Buy Damon Smith's cds here if yer a jazz fan.
  • Black Fiction
an amalgam of lovable misfits fuse their cheap and expensive electronics together in order to sally forth narcotic induced bop-rock whereby the smile refuses to let go of it's mother-daughter bond on yer face. Oh, and yer feet do the father-son two step as well. They are currently shopping labels, so see them soon before it's too crowded and pricey.

TIP : Remember, it takes a village, so don't be afraid to yell at other people's kids!
