AKA STANLEY SWEETHEART
I work in the new rock and soul sections of Amoeba, SF.
- Paul Weller - As Is Now
The latest release from Paul Weller is another classic album. Each song is a tight pop masterpiece showcasing Weller’s ever changing mood with eclectic song structure. The opening song, “Blink,” sets the house ablaze in one of his finest openers since “The Changinman”. “The Start of Forever” and “Roll Along Summer” reminds one of his T.S.C. days of seasonal beauty. Every song is brilliant on this album!
- The Clarkes - self-titled
The Clarkes are a duo made up of Anthony Johnson (on vocals) and Peter Weldon (guitars) who spent years of crafting beautiful pop songs for this long awaited debut album. Meshing styles of folk, rock, pop, and soul into their own brand of structure, this album is the sleeper of the year! Highly recommended. Favorite song for me is “Like a Sun.” - Barbarasteele - Soul, Set a Blaze
Barbarasteele’s full length debut album is packed full of strong pop songs. The opener, “Spy a Go Go,” clearly demonstrates the new direction that Barbarasteele is heading in. Letting go of their previous art rock leanings to show strong pop craftsmanship.“Pistil” continues this route with sing-along sensibility, which leads further into a confident new (yet at times retro) direction. Highly recommended!
- The Mizell Brothers - Mizell
Rare-Grove production pioneers the Mizell Bros have produced some of the best soul-jazz of the 70’s. Having produced the likes of Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Gary Bartz, Taste of Honey, etc., this compilation release gives one a taste of their brilliant production style. A great introduction to this awesome team. Beautiful and groundbreaking.
- Banda Uniao Black - self-titled
After finishing the comeback album for Joe Bataan (the awesome Call My Name LP), producer Daniel Callas teamed up with Sean Marquand, flew to Brazil and recorded yet another masterpiece with Brazilian band, Banda Uniao Black. The opening song, “Everyone’s a Winner,” (a cover of the Hot Chocolate hit) sums up the rest of the album. Jazzy and funky - a must own!
- Masculin Feminin DVD
Criterion has finally released Jean-Luc Godard’s French New Wave masterpiece from 1966. Starring Jean-Pierre Leaud and Chantal Goya, the film examines Parisian love immersed in the Marx and Coca-Cola generation. Shot in black and white with cameos from Francois Hardy and Brigite Bardot, this film defines the French New Wave look at the youth of Paris.
- La Dolce Vita DVD
Koch Lorber Films has released Federico Fellini’s Italian study of the lifestyles of the rich, through the eyes of the paparazzi and jet set. The black and white film looks beautiful, and Nino Rota’s score transports us to a world that feels surreal and debaucherous. An Itailian work of art!
- The Bird with the Crystal Plumage DVD
Blue Underground has released the definitive version of Dario Argento’s groundbreaking giallo. Filled with enough extras to make this a worthwhile purchase, Argento’s film has never looked
better. This film influenced an entire genre in Italy and still remains a suspenseful thriller with stylistic camera work and a great Ennio Morricone score.
- Danger: Diabolik DVD
Mario Bava adapted the popular fumeti (comic) from Italy, and created an original, colorful, pop art explosion. Diabolik is like a superhero terrorist who steals, kills and humiliates the authorities. The sets, camera work, music score and costumes are sublime. An example of who Mario Bava is one of the most underrated directors to come from Italy.
- Mikey & Nicky DVD
Elaine May’s 1977 sleeper contains amazing performances from John Cassavetes and Peter Falk. This film actually feels more like a Cassavetes directed film than any other, and would be a great double feature with Killing of a Chinese Bookie. The new DVD release was a real welcome for me (a big Cassavetes fan) and the film looks great. This is an intense study of male friendship.

- In the Red Records
The best contemporary label in the world. Nearly everything they put out this year was stellar. Ponys, Country Teasers, Human Eye, Dirtbombs singles collection, Intelligence, Deadly Snakes, Black Lips - all astoundingly great records on one label in one year. A breath of fresh air in today’s music world. They’re even releasing a new Sparks album next year!
- Devo - Live 1980 DVD
The greatest band in the world in their prime. Coolest nerds ever. To quote Kima, “Fuckin’ rocks, dude!”
- La Peste - Better Off Dead (Rave Up Records)
A new gem in the Rave Up series on par with Penetrators, Los Reactors & Epicycle.
- Swell Maps - reissues
The two LPs and a singles box set are well worth tracking down if you’ve got extra cash to pay euro import premiums. It’s times like this when a sugar momma/daddy comes in handy. But what kind of record dork as a sugar momma/daddy? Not me - not yet.
JAMES KETCHUM
- Whysp - self-titled
Sounds like you and the other players in your Dungeons and Dragons campaign started an in-character band.
SHAYDE
used rock
- Avaraus - Jattilaisrotta
Uber-prolific Fins show there are no rules. Free-noise that keeps you wanting more and more. This collection is a wonderful starting place for those curious about contemporary underground Finnish music.
- Jana Hunter - Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom
Ghostly vocal music from Texas. Cool no-fi production. Every song is perfect. Definite candle music.
- OCS - 3
Diseased SF urban folk music. Dreamy in that dirty scary kind of way.
- Howling Hex - You Can’t Beat Tomorrow
No you can’t. Even if you were not a fan of Royal Trux, the new Neil Hagerty stuff is worth exploring. If you’re a guitar nerd, this is for you.
- Samara Lubelski - Spectacular of Passages
New York based artist. Incredibly focused songs with minimal production. She’s played with Tower Recordings and Hall of Fame.

Used product seller
- Lilium - Short Stories
It’s familiar like I’ve heard it a million times. Dark Americana, not trust fund folk, fans of less dramatic Nick Cave might like this.
- David Matthews - Grodeck Whipper Jenny
Stand out (lost 70s) CD originally released on People in 1970.The music is tight with a lot of production but has that late ‘60s - early ‘70s vibe. Think “It’s a Beautiful Day,” but less hippy.
- Richard Brautigan - Listening to Richard Brautigan
He wrote books and put out a record that is very hard to find. That record is now on CD. It’s sort of a day in the life. Richard Brautigan lived in San Francisco - he’s dead now.
- Choubi Choubi - Folk and Pop
Sounds From Iraq - various artists
Another well constructed CD from sublime frequencies. The name and title of this disc is what you get. Fun to listen to over and over and an Iraq you don’t see every day in the news.
3 new titles worth checking out in Lounge:
- David Axelrod - Edge (Capitol Records Years 66-70)
- Esquivel - Sights and Sounds Of (Live in studio 1974, you can smell the polyester)
- Various Artists - Sounds of Tomorrow Vol. 9 (kooky electronic stuff)
Tip: Recommended Amoeba shopping spots - Lost ‘70s, $1 records, books on CD
BROTHER DYLAN SIMON
I made all these reviews up myself. These are all real albums. Real far out cosmic albums, each from the 1960s. And me, I don’t really know a thing about any of them.

- Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
Ingesting massive amounts of peyote and LSD, this former child star and collaborator with the likes of Brian Wilson and the Byrds fused a seemingly relentless amount of Americana into this skewed and erratic album. It twists and turns with affected vocals and elaborate orchestration. There are echoes and effects throughout. His labyrinthine lyrics pulse through the rather structureless songs. It’s a compelling and unique relic of the late 1960s.
- Hapshash and the Coloured Coat - Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids
Some people say that Amon Duul must have been listening to this record quite a bit over at the old commune. Other people say that this record is way too far out or just plain worthless. People don’t know anything. This record would be (at this moment) the ideal psychedelic-drugtaking- and-freaking-out-to-the-relentlessjam record. I won’t put money on it, but I bet these guys had no idea what they were doing. They must have gotten together with some buddies (the Heavy Metal Kids are pre-Spooky Tooth by the way) and brought along a box of whistles, bongos, and other assorted instruments, then dropped some acid and jammed ‘til the sun came up. It’s truly incredible - it’s all I ever listen to now, man. Plus the band was really a side project to the art collective of the same name which also made recognizable psychedelic posters over in London in the late ‘60s, naturally.
- International Harvester - Sov Gott Rose-Marie
Man, here’s another band that got a head start on old Amon Duul. These guys weren’t German or English, though. I guess they liked taking drugs and delving into long droning jams over in Sweden too. This band has been together forever, changing their name to Trad Gras Och Stenar in the early ‘70s. The first half is a combination of pre-Kraut rock, psych and Fugs silly freak out. The second half contains two long droning Kraut-like jams. These guys’ proficiency in jamming with each other is quite compelling as the songs build up slowly. The atmosphere calls in a bit of a dream state that drones on like a soundtrack to a journey into a deserted land in the autumn sun. - The Fugs - Second Album
This group of beat poets and protohippies crafted a poignant brand of coffee house and book store rock. They can’t play very good, yet somehow ever song is perfect. They like drugs, women and the absurd, and each terrific song is riddled with these images and more.
- The Fool - self-titled
I didn’t want to put this one on here, but I figured that since I can’t keep myself from listening to it at least once a day throughout the past few weeks, I owe it to myself and the public to lay it right here as my last review. The Fool were also a design collective that hailed from Amsterdam. They moved to London and worked with The Beatles and The Hollies, among others. In 1967, it was decided they would make an album, and their buddy, Graham Nash produced it. It is questionable as to how much of The Fool actually played on the album, but these songs do show what music would become in the following years. Also taking hold of some of those rhythmic jams that the Germans were famous for a couple years later.
