LOREN "FOLKLORE" CONE
- Kashmere Stage Band - Texas Thunder Soul : 1968-1974
Houston high schoolers play big-band deep funk like they invented it. Originally recorded and released by Maestro Conrad O. Johnson, and re-discovered and distributed by the reputable Now-Again [Stones Throw sibling].
- Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
Virginia trappers slang beaver pelts draped in BAPE and the Neptunes' eerie noir score. Fury never sounded so cool and swaggery.
- J Dilla - Donuts and The Shining
The late great sonic sculptor and mood molder Dilla receives the media barrage that he furtively eluded in his lifetime - 'cause he only left the studio to buy donuts. Mmm...
- Ghostface - Fishscale and More Fish
Ghost knows how to bait a hook - and a verse - though both of his marine life inspired albums omit carp and grouper in favor of crack and groupies. I'm wearing hip-waders and galoshes. What gives?
- Barls Gnarkley - St.Elsewhere
Dance. Cry. Dance. Cry. Even unborn, dead, and deaf people like it.
Tips: Mondays and Wednesdays at Royale in North Beach (1326 Grant Ave. @ Green St.), no cover, hip-hop / soul / funk / electro with intermittent freestyling of words! http://www.myspace.com/folklorelegend
ARIEN
I am the coolest person that works at Amoeba.
- This Heat - freakin’ everything
- Chromatics - Plaster Hounds
- Omid - Distant Drummer
- Ariel Pink’s Haunted Grafffiti - anything
- Owls - Owls
GLENN HAWLEY
A guy who just refuses to believe the music world is as bad as it seems! Forget trends.
- The Damned - The Black Album 2CD Deluxe Edition
Their 1980 classic LO, now expanded to a double with all original features intact with b-sides, live concert tracks, single edits and more. I say “the best damned CD yet!” You should too!
- Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood - Nancy & Lee 3
Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood together again! With old collaborators Billy Strange and Duane Eddy! They are all older, but no wiser! Great funny songs and true-to-life sentiment. Out only in Australia! But not expensive!
- The Raveonettes - Pretty in Black
3rd CD from the Swedish duo. Great pop songs with unusual, fantastic and original (for these days) production by girl group/Blondie producer, Richard Gotterhrer. Make ‘em big like they should...
- ZZZ - Sound of zzz
Suicide (the band)-inspired synth/noise rock - two guys with their fingers on this crazy world of ours! Called the band that was spawned from the Cramps lying down with Suicide! Kill you now!
- Garbage - Bleed Like Me
Newest CD from the rock band with all them problems! Well, it makes for great, catchy tunes to jam the days away. Relax! It’s just cool talkin’.
Tip: Trust yourself! They are your ears! Also, Mojo Magazine!
THADDEUS
I am hopelessly devoted to the music of my youth so here are some of my favorite bars.
- Mars Bar - 1st & 1st, NYC
Diviest dive bar ever, and my favorite bar of all time. If you are a woman, I suggest you avoid the bathrooms.
- 8mm - Schonhauser allee, Berlin
Cool bar with films screening on the wall and the occasional awesome visiting DJ. Order the crack-synth; they love that.
- Hemlock Tavern - Polk St., SF
Fantastic punk rock DJ’s on Monday nights. Good place to people watch, but usually too crowded.
- Expansion Bar - Church & Market, SF
I don’t know why, but I love this bar. Good place to avoid crowds.
- Sweetwater Tavern - North 6th,
- Williamsburg, Brooklyn (R.I.P.)
Once an awesome punk-dive bar, now an upscale “bar & grill”. STUPID YUPPIES!
RICHARD BRYAN
- Ry Cooder - Chavez Ravine
Leave it to Cooder to take a very real & tragic outrage and turn it into a surreal tale of pathos and humor mixed with bizarre characters, UFOs, chicharrones y musica fantastico! The best concept album in decades... RIP Don Lalo Guererro, your contribution will continue to resonate.
- Ali Farke Toure' & Toumani Diabate' - In the Heart of the Moon
Too beautiful for words...
- Boubacar Traore - Kongo Magn
Scrumptious!
- Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane - Live at Carnegie Hall
Heaven sent!
- Bill Frisell - East/West
Frisell at his very guitaristic best.
- Jordi Savall - Les Grandes
- Eaux Musicales de Versailles - Chefs-D’oevreinstrumentaux des
- Regnes Do Louis XIII et Louis XIV - Les Concert des Nations
A musical feast!
My favorite DVD documentaries are the documentary on the making of the March of the Penguins documentary and the documentary on the making of the music for and from the Grizzly Man documentary.Live: Cachao @ Bimbo's. Magnificent!!! May the beauty of music continue to transcend these ugly times...
BRAD
- Cocteau Twins - Lullabies to Violaine
Finally all the singles and b-sides collected in one place by one of the most amazing bands to ever exist. The box is worth buying alone for the awesome packaging that seems to be made of human skin. Possibly put together by the dude from Silence of the Lambs. Unfortunately this does not come with lyrics. So I will have to continue pretending to know what she is singing about. Beautiful music.
- Sigur Ros - Takk
Another great album by the greatest band in Iceland. Beautiful music that takes me away from the world every once in a while to a magical place. Much like the Cocteau Twins, I have no idea what he is singing about. But the music is magical. And he is the coolest gay dude in rock next to Morrissey.
- Voxtrot - Raised by Wolves
I can't wait for the real album to come out some time this year. Because I am wearing out this little ep of beautiful songs. They kinda sound like Belle and Sebastian. In that nerdy european indie pop kinda way. But they are actually from Austin. This album is probably better than anything else you could possibly find right now. If you like that kind of thing.
- Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - The Days of Mars
This sounds like your favorite soundtrack to your favorite sci-fi/horror 80s movie. It's like the score to one of those movies that you keep watching over and over again only because the music is so good and you don’t even really care about the movie that much because some stupid jock dude is in the movie way too much anyway so you put it on and just listen. For fans of john carpenter movies who actually think he is a good composer.
- Explosions in the Sky - How Strange Innocence
This is a reissue of their excellent first album which I think they originally made like 5 copies of. More beautiful instrumental music from my - and hopefully your - favorite temporary residence band. They are also from Austin. I think I might have to move there just to hang out with these bands. Great music to listen to when you want to think about stuff for a while and need to relax. You could really do yoga or have sex or do your laundry or whatever you do to this music. Good stuff.
DERECK DONOHUE
- Boris - Pink
Boris deliver another slab of brilliance. It starts out with a shoegazer song, then the album kicks in. Unfortunately, there is only one stoner/drone song, but I think they made enough of those albums. Easily show of the year with Sunn on Halloween.
- Delia Gonzalez/Russom - Days of Mars
It reminds me of a lost soundtrack to an early John Carpenter film. It’s really good to listen to when you’re stuck in monotonous situations (i.e. airport, family gatherings,WORK).
- Ennio Morricone -Crime and Dissonance
A two-disc set of Morricone’s trippier excursions. Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls compiled 30 tracks for your listening pleasure. Upon hearing, you’re sure to find where a lot of experimental artists get their ideas from.
- BJ Nilsen - Fade to White
Another great artist from the Touch label. Good to fall asleep to and good to wake up to. - Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
Still haven’t slowed down after all these years. This band could shit on a record and I would probably buy it. (As long as it’s fast and noisy!)
