This is by far his most mature and cohesive record. It’s a 2-disc set, dividing intimate ballads and socio-political soul-rock. The division allows the rock n’ rant side the momentum it deserves, while allowing the pensive side its space. As a whole, it's musically satisfying and lyrically potent. From his scathing view of post-Katrina New Orleans in “Black Rain”, to the hopeful intimacy of “Morning Yearning”, to the Dylanesque rocker, “Please Don't Talk About Murder While I'm Eating”, it seldom fails to compel.
