              British pop singer-songwriter Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick McManus on August 25, 1954 in Paddington, Westminster, and grew up in Twickenham, in Greater London. His mother was born Mary Costello, and his father, Ross McManus, was a bandleader, singer, and composer. So, young Declan seemed destined to be a musician, and his future stage surname was already in place. His first gig came as his father's backup singer on the 1974 recording of a commercial jingle written by the senior McManus.
