John Lee Hooker arrived on the blues scene like a man out of time. His first big hit, “Boogie Chillen’,” was issued by Modern Records in early 1949. It reached #1 on the national rhythm & blues charts, sandwiched between instrumental hits by saxophonists Big Jay McNeely (“Deacon’s Hop”) and Paul Williams (“The Hucklebuck”).
