Modern rock band Weezer exploded onto the Los Angeles music scene amid the rise of grunge in the early 90s, composed of vocalist-guitarist Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson, bassist Matt Sharp and guitarist Jason Cropper. Their pop-oriented modern rock was heavily indebted both to heavy metal and a quirky, nerdy underdog sensibility that contrasted with the party-hearty, shallowness of '80s rock.
