Contrary to popular scientific belief, Big Star didn’t begin with a bang. It did, however, begin with Ice Water and a Box Top. The former was a Memphis-area rock band fronted by singer/guitarist Chris Bell and included bass player Andy Hummel, drummer Jody Stephens, and guitarist Steve Ray, who left in 1971.
