The volcanic drummer Art Blakey, an innovator in the bebop era and a dominant presence in the hard bop movement of the Fifties, was also an extraordinary bandleader. Even a partial list of graduates from his university of jazz serves notice that his Jazz Messengers was one of the most formidable institutions of its day.
