On her death in 1999, Antonio Guterres, the Prime Minister of Portugal declared, “Amália Rodrigues was the voice of Portugal’s soul.” Rodrigues sang fado, an Afro-Portuguese form of “blues” marked by meditative tempos and poetic lyrics.
