Amoeba Review
03/18/2013
NYC thrash metal titans pay tribute to some of their favorite party rock bands of the '70s on this kick-out-the-jams EP. Unlike their jackhammer cover version of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time" (one of the best rock covers ever, by the way), herein they attempt total fidelity to the originals. Joey Belladonna belts out some impressive imitations of Bon Scott's growl ("T.N.T.") and Steve Perry's operatic vibrato ("Keep On Runnin'"), and they even bring in keyboard virtuoso Fred Mandel to replicate the Hammond solo for Boston's "Smokin'." It sounds like they had a blast trying to recreate the sound of Cheap Trick, Thin Lizzy and even Rush, and at times it's pretty close to the real thing. Those thrash thugs sure keep their range under wraps. With a great remix of "Crawl" from their latest studio album, Worship Music. Could they be brushing up their chops on this covers set for a mighty return to Belladonna-era metal mania? Hopefully so!
