Naomi (CD)
The Cave Singers
Amoeba Review
03/04/2013
The Cave Singers continue to evolve on their rootsy fourth album. Rising from the ashes of beloved indie rockers Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Cave Singers sound fully committed to a new sound on Naomi. “Canopy” moves along gracefully like a Bob Dylan or Paul Simon song, with a little spring in its step to propel its folky sound. “Have to Pretend” moves along with a funk feel aided by new bassist Morgan Henderson (Blood Brothers). Pete Quirk’s vocals are raw enough to draw you into the band’s laid-back compositions, which offer subtle rewards, like the lush springtime bridge that crops up in “No Tomorrows” or the rumbling last half of the bluesy “It’s a Crime.” Though some of the outright passion of its members’ previous work is missed, Naomi is successful as a musical comfort food, warm, inviting and with enough shuffle to keep it from being overly lulling.
