Flume (CD)
Flume
Amoeba Review
02/18/2013
Flume’s spaced-out electro takes dubstep and gives it a friendly makeover — no super aggressive beats and nothing so chilled out it floats away. Tracks like “Sleepless” build to satisfying crescendos amid vocals that are skewed and never straightforward but aren’t too extreme, either, always staying in service of the song. The soulful lead vocal samples of “Holdin On” keep things a little steadier amid Flume’s fluttering synthesizers, while its simple hip-hop beat and two-and-a-half-minute run time help the more arcane synth stabs and vocal manipulations go down smoother than sizzurp. That’s not to say Flume isn’t adventurous — weird, warbling synth chords, the occasional rap and one of the best updates on chillwave around (“Insane” featuring Moon Holiday) make Flume a dazzling debut that’s both widely appealing and as here and now as it gets.
