Fela Kuti’s Best of the Black President Vol. 2, like the volume before it, is essential for anyone hoping to traverse the peaks and canyons of Kuti’s vast catalog. For an artist with more than 70 albums and track lengths that rarely come in at shorter than 10 minutes, to say that task is daunting would be an understatement. But Kuti’s catalog is also warm and welcoming, as anyone picking up this compendium will find. Despite their long lengths, songs like “Everything Scatter” are far from formless, built on a taut groove and allowing for Kuti’s chants and declarations, which grew increasingly political over time against oppression in Nigeria and across Africa. You’ll hear the influence the horns and beats have had on countless artists across the spectrum, influencing the development of rock, hip-hop and R&B alike. For Kuti fans or those more familiar with his work, Vol. 2 also works as a mixtape of favorites, moving from funky, hypnotic jams (“Expensive Shit”) through the magic of “Underground System’s” horns and jazz piano, “Sorrow Tears and Blood’s” cathartic lament and “Black Man’s Cry’s” pure, guttural joy. Best of the Black President’s organizers have done the seemingly impossible with these collections — created gateway releases for one of the most iconic, challenging and rewarding artists of our time.
