Heartthrob (LP)
Tegan and Sara
Amoeba Review
“X band goes pop” is the mantra of late in dealing with rock bands who discover synthesizers and programmed beats, but Tegan & Sara, who’ve been flirting with synth-pop since their excellent “Back in Your Head” single broke through years ago, thankfully don’t lose themselves amid the beats of Heartthrob. That’s because they haven’t forgotten the most important beat of all — the beat of the heart. Zing! The band’s bleeding-heart lyrics are still splattered all over the album. Lots of heartbreak everywhere, on the Robyn-esque “Goodbye, Goodbye,” on the piano-laden “I Was a Fool.” The band’s lyrics occasionally spill into cliché, but really Tegan & Sara have always been best at writing hooks and setting them to words anyone can relate to, and their Cyndi Lauper chirp is really well-suited for this kind of thing. I could see blasting just about any of these songs loudly in the car — I just might keep the windows rolled up. But you shouldn’t; blast Tegan & Sara’s poptastic Heartthrob with pride!
