The Sticks (CD)
Mother Mother
Amoeba Review
02/11/2013
Ryan Guldemond & Co. have upped the ante for this one, turning up the tension, the lyrical wit and broadening their themes to address all kinds of modern anomie and breakdown. Like other smart Canadian boy-girl pop bands (Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire), Mother Mother deliver angelically sung lyrical craftsmanship that strives for the postmodern punch of the Talking Heads or Elvis Costello, but here they've stepped away from their previously lighthearted sound and soured it up with stark, grungy riffs and distorted backbeats. This newly uglified sound, and their new focus on the dark side of life and love in the industrial age, give their latest a kind of heft and maturity that the Arcade Fire found on The Suburbs, and that Radiohead perfected way back with OK Computer.
