Tolstoy's tale of lust and betrayal in 19th-century Russia gets a sizzling modern update by Joe Wright, who similarly punched up Pride and Prejudice, and majestically brought Ian McEwan's Atonement to the screen. Keira Knightley and Jude Law stand out among the stellar cast, who flit to and fro between theatre and reality in a masterfully woven web of intrigue. Much credit is also due to legendary playwright Tom Stoppard's wondrously clever script, and to chameleonic composer Dario Marianelli, who steeps the action in music that is emotionally if not actually Russian. By turns pretty and sensuous, menacing and forceful, the score builds to a striking climax for the crucial ballroom scene. Marianelli has been Joe Wright's longtime accompanist, writing the Oscar-nominated music for Atonement and Price and Prejudice -- his stirring music for Anna makes this new approach to the great novel definitive.
