Pale Fire (CD)
El Perro del Mar
Amoeba Review
Pro-Nabokov bias aside, Pale Fire the perfect title for the new one from melancholy Swedish indie diva Sarah Assbring, aka El Perro Del Mar. For her, the pale fire is the wan glow of love on the horizon, the vague light of meaningfulness that dispels the gloom of life, if only for a while. And so her spectral voice wanders through the fog of processed beats and guitars, searching for that glow. She claims this one is inspired by the early-'90s trip-hop and house she once loved, and indeed, she recreates the hypnotic drag of Massive Attack and Tricky quite effectively in her own way. Every song is fought to a draw, a mutual surrender, and she leaves the battlefield an empty shell, whether victor or vanquished. In fact, in these songs she reminds me of nothing so much as Sade -- though so different in background and even genre, they both share that lovely resignation, that haunting, searching downer soul that weaves its own comfort. Let the pale fire burn!
