Graveyard
Amoeba Review
11/05/2012
Sweden's Graveyard are beloved by devotees of classic hard rock and metal the world over, and they're back with one of their toughest records yet. These Gothenburg longhairs play it straight -- straight riffs and high-octane rock that is, all vintage gear and old-school production, no wacky effects or noodly solos. Singer Joakim Nilsson has a heavy, throaty roar that delivers the goods, and axeman Jonatan Ramm is equally skilled at building tension with bluesy setups AND chopping off murderous power-riffs when it's time for the kill. What really gives Graveyard their evil power is that they've learned the lessons of '70s proto-metal so well -- it's not all screamy overkill like so many modern bands do, sapping songs of any emotional build. You've got to get into it with some psych-blues atmosphere, stir up a pounding nocturnal swirl, THEN kick over the fuel tanks and drop the match. Opener "An Industry of Murder" shows off their awesome skill at walking a bluesy road into a storm of metal madness. "Slow Motion Countdown" follows it up with dramatic, fiery flourish. And of course there are many Stooges / Sabbath chuggers along the way. This album sounds like it's beaming in from a parallel wood-paneled universe full of satanic black-light posters, rainbow candles and skinny kids in denim celebrating the dark arts of sex, drugs and rock & roll. Graveyard keeps the spirit of evil rock alive! Read More
